What Is A Diamond Accent?

What Is A Diamond Accent?

Diamonds are so stunning that they turn people's heads wherever they go. They are available in various qualities, designs, and forms. Whether you're a seasoned buyer or just starting, you should educate yourself on diamond embellishments.

Are you curious about diamond accents (and how they may elevate even the most stunning jewelry to the realm of the extraordinary)? Continue reading!

What Exactly Are Diamond Accents?

Diamond accents are tiny diamonds deliberately placed around a larger diamond in rings and other jewelry designs. These diamonds often have a carat weight of 0.25 or less and are cut more crudely. Thus, they are only a little sought after individually.

Several diamond accents are typically put logically to produce a spectacular result. Jewelry artisans use accents to increase and vary the ring's glimmer, shine, and sway design.

Types of Diamond Accents

Currently, there are four typical applications for diamond accents in jewelry, and they are:

  • Baguette-cut Diamond Accents

These diamonds have a rectangular shape with a step cut. Baguette diamonds are usually set as accent stones, with one on either side of a larger center stone. In addition, baguette diamonds are cut with only 14 facets, so they don't compete with larger diamonds for attention.

Due to their somewhat lengthy nature, baguette diamonds are simple to set within a narrow ring. Because of this, a channel setting is frequently used for baguette diamonds that run the length of a ring or bracelet.

  • Marquise Accent Diamonds

These diamonds have an oval shape with rounded corners that taper to sharp points at the top and bottom. In the same way, as baguette diamonds are typically set as side stones, marquise accent diamonds serve that function most often.

The unique shape of a marquise diamond contrasts beautifully with the traditional round cut of a diamond, creating a stunning and unique piece of jewelry. In addition, their unusual cut gives them greater flexibility.

  • Trillion Accent Diamonds

These triangle diamonds are cut similarly to radiant diamonds to maximize their brilliance. Triliard diamonds are frequently used as the smaller of the two accent stones in a three-stone setting.

A diamond with the brilliance of a trillion will outshine others that aren't as brilliant. This is why round, oval, or radiant center stones work best with trillion accent stones.

  • Round Accent Diamonds

The simplicity and elegance of round diamond accents cannot be overstated. Because of how well its timeless shape complements all other diamond shapes, this is the most adaptable accent diamond.

Side stones, pave settings, and channel settings all feature prominently for round diamonds. The fashionable halo setting, in which smaller round diamonds frame a larger center stone, is another common application of round diamonds. These gems will make any occasion shine brighter and more brilliantly.

The Ideal Diamond Shape for Your Hand Size

The Ideal Diamond Shape for Your Hand Size

There are many factors to consider when choosing your perfect diamond shape–budget, style, durability, etc. It’s easy to fall in love with a diamond you see on someone else on social media. However, another factor to consider is how a particular shape will look on your hand. There has been plenty of instances where a buyer loves the look of a shape in pictures but not on them. If this is the case for you, continue reading to figure out which diamond shape would be the most flattering on your finger.

Wide Hands or Fingers

If you have wider hands or fingers, you may love the diamond shapes that offer a slimming effect. The best diamond shapes for this goal would be oval-shaped, emerald cut, or marquise cut. Also, if you are dying for a large diamond on your finger, you are in luck! Larger diamonds with long, fancy shapes tend to look amazing on wider hands. Go bold with intricate details and unique bands. Don’t worry about your budget; there are plenty of options for a statement piece for an affordable price.

Slim Hands or Long Fingers

Luckily for you, if you have long fingers or slim hands, you have plenty of options for your ideal diamond shape. Figure out your goals and how you want your ring to affect the look of your hand; to accentuate your long fingers, consider an elongated piece, and if you want balance, choose a round cut. Wider diamond rings work beautifully with longer hands since they look proportional.

Small Hands

Smaller, daintier diamonds look fantastic on small hands. Proportion is key, and smaller diamonds look more aesthetically pleasing on smaller hands. Round, princess, and Asscher cut diamonds provide more depth than surface area, making them the perfect shapes for small hands. However, those who have short fingers may be interested in diamonds with an elongated effect–oval-shaped, pear-shaped, and marquise cut, as stated above.

How to Care for Your Diamond Engagement Ring

How to Care for Your Diamond Engagement Ring

You have received the most beautiful engagement ring, but how do you care for it? Diamond engagement rings require proper maintenance as does any fine jewelry in your possession. Continue reading for tips on cleaning, protecting, and properly caring for your ring.

The Fit of Your Ring Matters

The fit of your ring is an important factor in ring care. Your ring should fit snugly on your finger–not impossible to take off but not easily able to slip off your finger. If your ring is too big for your finger, it could suddenly fall off and damage the center stone. However, if it is too small, it could warp the band to the shape of your finger and overall be very uncomfortable. Sizing isn’t difficult but if you aren’t sure if your ring is the correct size, book a consultation with Bostonian Jewelers.

When Should You Take Your Ring Off?

We understand that you would want to show off your beautiful ring at all times. However, there are some occasions when you should take your ring off to avoid damage to the center stone or band.

You should take off your ring when exercising. If you lift weights, you could easily knock your ring against something heavy which can lead to scraping, scuffing, or even chipping your center stone. Vigorous exercising can also dirty your ring from sweat.

You should set your ring aside when washing your hands or showering. Harsh soaps and tap water can dirty your diamond and accelerate wear and tear. This is the same for performing house chores. Accidentally spraying cleaning solution on your ring could aid in dirting your diamond.

How to Clean Your Ring

A dirty diamond is dull and may appear cloudy with a brownish tint. Because diamonds are naturally sticky, it can attract dirt and grime very quickly. Regularly cleaning your diamond can keep it in tip-top shape. The following products should NOT be used to clean your ring:

  • Toothpaste
  • Boiling water
  • Any hard bristle brush
  • Vodka

Avoid any cleaning “hacks” and make sure to clean your ring the correct way. If you cannot bring your ring to get professionally cleaned, use the following to clean your ring at home:

  • Dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Soft bristle brush

Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap, and let your ring sit in the solution for 2-3 minutes. Then, take your engagement ring and gently brush the ring with the soft bristle brush. Rinse the ring with fresh water and dry it with a microfiber towel.

How To Save Money On An Engagement Ring

How To Save Money On An Engagement Ring

The engagement ring of your dreams doesn’t have to have an incredibly high price tag. There are plenty of ways that you and your fiancée can save money on an engagement ring without sacrificing the beauty or quality of the ring. These are the jeweler’s secrets to getting a stunning engagement ring that won’t break the budget:

Choose A Solitaire Diamond

There’s something truly timeless about a gorgeous solitaire diamond engagement ring. A solitaire diamond on a slender gold band will cost less than a ring with a center diamond and a band filled with diamonds or clusters of diamonds around the center stone. A simple and elegant solitaire engagement ring is a lovely traditional choice that will work for almost any budget.

Lab Grown Diamonds Are Affordable And Ethical

If you think of cubic zirconia when you think of lab-grown diamonds, you need to see some more modern lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds these days are stunning. They have the same fire, clarity, and sparkle as mined diamonds but cost a fraction of the price. Lab-grown diamonds are also a more ethical choice if that’s important to you and your fiancée. If you’ve been hesitant to buy a diamond engagement ring because of the ethical considerations and the cost, look at some of the gorgeous lab-grown diamond engagement rings available now.

Gemstones Can Be The Star Of The Show

If you and your fiancée want to be unique and not go for a diamond ring, gemstone engagement rings are very on-trend. Sapphires, emeralds, rubies, amethysts, and other colorful gems are having a cultural moment, especially among younger couples. Gemstone rings are affordable for everyone, especially for couples with a limited budget. A gemstone ring with a white gold band with a few diamond chips is a beautiful way to marry traditional and modern engagement ring styles.

Avoid Round Cut Diamonds

Round-cut diamonds may draw your eye, but they will cost you. A round-cut diamond can cost as much as 25% more than any other cut. Since you have to cut away a lot of the surface area of the diamond to make a round shape, it will cost more money to find a diamond that will still have the sparkle and light after it’s been cut. Choosing an oval or a marquis cut can save a lot of money on a brilliant diamond engagement ring.

Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most significant decisions you’ll make in your life because you or your fiancée will be wearing it forever. Come see us at Bostonian Jewelers, and we can show you all kinds of stunning rings that are priced to fit your budget.

Resizing An Engagement Ring

Resizing An Engagement Ring

There’s nothing more exciting than the moment when your partner asks you to marry them and slides that special ring on your finger. But what if the ring doesn’t fit? If it’s the perfect ring but not the perfect size, don’t worry. In most cases, a jeweler can resize the ring so it fits you perfectly and is comfortable enough that you can wear it for the rest of your life.

What Does Resizing Mean?

When a jeweler resizes a ring, they will rework the ring's band to fit your finger better. They won’t change the ring setting or the main stone. However, if there are diamonds or gemstones on the band itself, they may need to remove several of those stones in order to change the size of the band.

When the ring fits the way it should, it should sit comfortably on your finger. It should be loose enough that it won’t become uncomfortable if your finger swells slightly but not loose enough that it slides on your finger. If you can slide or spin the ring, it’s too big. If it leaves indentations in your finger, it’s too small.

Can All Rings Be Resized?

Most engagement rings can be resized. The base metal for an engagement ring band is typically gold, silver, or platinum.  Silver and gold are relatively soft metals and easy to rework, so resizing rings made from silver or gold, including white gold, is typically not difficult. Platinum is a little bit of a harder metal but can be reworked most of the time.

If your engagement’s band isn’t made from gold, silver, or platinum, it may not be able to be resized. Specialty rings or custom rings made from resin or enamel usually can’t be resized.

How Big Or Small Can The Ring Go?

Typically an engagement ring made from silver, gold, or platinum can be resized in two sizes in either direction. If your ring needs to be made larger or smaller, then you may need to have a custom-made band. Sometimes the jeweler will be able to save the original stone and setting and add it to the custom band.

Working with an experienced jeweler is the best way to ensure that your ring is safely resized without compromising the quality of the ring or damaging the stones. When you work with an expert jeweler, you will get a ring that looks stunning and fits comfortably. How to Clean Gold Jewelry

How to Clean Gold Jewelry

There’s nothing more upsetting than realizing that your favorite piece of gold jewelry is beginning to tarnish. The brightness of the jewels has dulled, and the gleam of the metal has begun to fade; before long, your once-loved accessory will be consigned to the back of a drawer. But If you keep up a regular cleaning routine, you can avoid this situation. In this blog, you will learn how to clean gold jewelry. Read on!

What You Need To Clean Gold Jewelry

Before restoring the brilliance and sheen to your gold, you must first obtain some ingredients. Here are some things you need to get started:

  • Warm water
  • Dish detergent
  •  Bowl
  • Toothbrush
  •  Smooth fabric
  •  Baking soda with salt (optional)

A safe and effective way to maintain the perfect state of your Gold is by using a cleaning solution made specifically for gold jewelry. Just be sure to identify Gold as one of the potential uses.

Steps Involved in Cleaning Gold Jewelry

  1. Mix the Water and the Dish Soap Together.
  2. Put the Gold that you want to clean into the soapy liquid and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  3. After removing it from the soapy water, scrub any crevices or nooks with a small brush with soft bristles, such as a toothbrush.
  4. Then, let it air dry.

How To Clean Gold Jewelry With Baking Soda and Salt

Baking soda and salt are two everyday household items used in an alternative cleaning process for Gold. Create a paste by combining the two ingredients using the same amount. After mixing the paste with warm water, place the Gold in the solution and allow it to sit for up to 15 minutes. Remove any dirt with a brush, rinse it off, and let it dry.

How Often Should You Clean Gold?

You must clean gold jewelry regularly, depending on how often it is worn. A cleaning performed once a year ought to be sufficient for items that are only sometimes used or stored away as adornment. However, if you wear gold jewelry daily, you should strive to clean it once a month so that the Gold remains in pristine condition.

How to Keep Gold Clean Longer

If you want your gold jewelry to stay clean for longer, remove it before engaging in messy or dirty activities that require using your hands, such as gardening or kneading dough by hand. Debris tends to accumulate and become lodged in the crevices and corners of jewelry over time. In addition, you should avoid swimming when wearing gold jewelry because the pool's chlorine might tarnish the metal.

When storing Gold for an extended period, you should make sure that the container it is kept in is dust-proof, and you should also remember to remove the Gold from its storage location regularly so that it may be polished.

White Sapphire Engagement Rings

White Sapphire Engagement Rings

If you are looking for diamond alternatives for an engagement ring, white sapphire is a great option. Typically when you think of sapphires, a blue gemstone comes to mind. However, some mined sapphires have slight chemical differences, resulting in their white color. Continue reading to learn more about this gemstone.

What are the Differences Between White Sapphires and Diamonds?

The major difference between these two stones is the visual difference. White sapphires have a unique, silver glow compared to the shinier flashes seen in diamonds. Although the visual differences can be seen with the naked eye, a white sapphire gemstone is still a great alternative and can be just as beautiful!

Durability & Longevity

Both gemstones are perfect for everyday wear, such as engagement rings. Sapphires and diamonds have crisp faceting since they are hard enough to be cut precisely; diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, while sapphires are right behind with a 9. Both gems are extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear, making them very long-lasting with minimal maintenance.

Brilliance

White sapphires reflect less light than diamonds, which gives them a more silvery-gray sparkle. Diamonds, on the other hand, are optimal for reflecting light for maximum sparkle because of their high refractive index. Sapphires have a low refractive index, making it tougher for light to shine through dirt and residue. However, because of its unique glow, sapphires can make gorgeous gemstones for engagement rings.

Price

A white sapphire may be perfectly within budget if you are looking to purchase a larger cut. White sapphires are significantly more affordable than diamonds of comparable quality and size. Consider purchasing an engagement ring with the sapphire gemstone if you want something unique and equally as beautiful as a diamond and could save you hundreds of dollars.

The Process of Resizing a Platinum Ring

The Process of Resizing a Platinum Ring

There’s no quick and easy way to resize a platinum ring. It can be a tricky process that’s labor-intensive, time-consuming, and requires a particular heating treatment. It’s more challenging to resize a platinum ring than other precious metals since a higher heating point is needed to get it done. During the process, there’s a heightened risk of the heat affecting the stones. Want to resize your platinum ring? Let’s dig a little deeper into the process of resizing a platinum ring.

What Is Platinum?

The word platinum is derived from the Spanish word 'Platina', which means little silver. It’s a rare and valuable metal extensively used to make jewelry. Platinum is also resistant to corrosion and tough to damage.

Resizing a platinum ring requires a jeweler with the skills and know-how to do the job.

Stone Removal

When resizing platinum rings, the jeweler must remove the gemstone(s) to avoid damaging them. The reason for this is that the high heat can mess up the gemstones as they move quickly through platinum. The gem could be fragile, like an opal. Removal of the gems is the first step in the process.

Sizing

At this point in the process, the size of the ring goes up or down based on the individual’s need. The jeweler cuts the “shank”, the curved portion of the ring, removes it and then recloses it. This can be done in one of two ways using soldering:

  • Closing it back up with a portion of what’s removed, making the ring smaller, OR
  • Adding a bit of metal to the “shank”, making the ring bigger.

Heat is used to open and close the “shank” when sizing up or down. A torch can be used, but a laser machine best suits platinum ring resizing for precision and evenness when heating. A platinum wire is often used to fuse the ring, closing it up.

Setting the Stone

After sizing the ring up or down, the next step is putting the gemstone(s) back in place. Since platinum is pliable, there’s a bit of ease to setting the stone.

Cleaning and Polishing

No resizing job is complete without the jeweler cleaning and polishing the ring. The ring's polish will either be a high finish or a matte/brushed finish. A matte finish can help to hide scratches. Cleaning the ring can be done using steam or in an ultrasonic tank, which helps remove debris created during the resizing process.

The Difference Between White Gold and Platinum Rings

The Difference Between White Gold and Platinum Rings

It’s time to buy a ring, and you’re unsure whether to choose white gold or platinum. Platinum is typically the more popular material, which is why the cost can be pretty expensive. Although, on the surface, these two metals may appear the same, many factors set them apart. Read this post to learn more about their differences before you make your decision.

Durability and Care

Although white gold and platinum may look the same to the naked eye, they definitely hold up differently. White gold is a beautiful metal that looks gorgeous initially but wears out faster than platinum. It’s not pure gold, as it is made from yellow gold mixed with a white metal such as silver or nickel. After these metals are combined, the jewelry will be “rhodium plated” to give it a shinier finish. Over time, the rhodium plating will wear down, and the natural yellow color will show. Once this happens, you’ll have to get it replated to bring back the white color and shine.

White gold jewelry may require a long-term commitment to maintenance, whereas platinum will age differently. Platinum will not change color over time; however, the material will lose its shiny finish. Some prefer this because the brilliance of the diamond will enhance. Platinum has better durability than white gold. Platinum can handle wear and tear better, which helps it last for generations. It doesn’t take much to get back to its original look and shine and can be resized if passed down.

Hypoallergenic

Whether a metal is hypoallergenic or not may be a factor in ring shopping if you have sensitive skin. Hypoallergenic jewelry helps avoid the possibility of an allergic reaction. Platinum is a great choice since it is 95% pure and the only genuine hypoallergenic precious jewelry. Since white gold is made from a mix of metals, its potential to cause irritation is higher.

Cost

Cost is the most significant selling point of white gold over platinum. Platinum will always be the more expensive option since it is rarer than gold. It is also more dense than gold, and since precious metals are priced by weight, it will be more costly. If you are on a budget yet still want to buy a beautiful ring for your significant other, white gold will be a great option. If you want the best of the best, no matter the cost, consider investing in platinum.

Tips on Buying an Engagement Ring

Tips on Buying an Engagement Ring

Buying an engagement ring can be an exciting yet scary experience! Of course, you would want the ring to be perfect since it will represent your everlasting love for your partner. Although it is easy to romanticize the process, buying an engagement ring can be a big expense that you want to get right. Whether you are shopping for rings together or buying it solo, here are some tips for buying the perfect ring.

Choose Your Shape and Band

Knowing what diamond shape your significant other would love will help you tremendously. This will give you more information on pricing, carat count, and more. Every shape has a different price per carat. Pear and marquise cuts are less expensive, whereas round cuts can be costly. Research different ring cuts, and find two styles that suit your significant other.

Engagement rings and wedding bands are traditionally made from yellow gold, white gold, silver, or platinum. However, rose gold has gained popularity as a modern alternative. Platinum is more expensive than silver because of its higher density and rarity. Take into account your lifestyle, aesthetic, and budget, for some metals scratch or wear down easier than others.

Pick Your Carat Size

Some prefer a large stone, whereas others prefer the clearest diamond possible. Your significant other should have an idea of their stone size since that is an important factor in ring shopping. Once you find that size, color and clarity can be tweaked to something within your budget. Keep an open mind–your significant other may think they know what size they’d like, but may find something different once you start shopping. Save costs by buying a less common carat size. Diamond prices are also determined by popularity.

Cut and Clarity

You can save money by purchasing the lowest color diamond that remains colorless to the naked eye. Same with clarity–opt for the lowest clarity diamond. However, never sacrifice the quality of the cut of the diamond. The cut is a major factor in the sparkle of the diamond. If an expensive, rough diamond is cut poorly, it will look worse than a less expensive diamond cut perfectly.
