A Guide to Gemstones For Winter Birthdays

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Jewelry is always a special gift, but what better way to make it more sentimental than by adding a birthstone? Each birth month has a specific gemstone associated with it, representing a unique significance. The history of birthstones dates back to ancient times when civilizations believed that these gemstones had a certain set of powers. Some bring luck, while others bring good health, fortune, and protection. While we still honor these birthstones as they did in ancient times, the stones associated with each month are not necessarily the same. If you have a winter birthday or are looking for just the right gift for winter babies, we’ve put together this guide to dive deeper into the significance of the meaning behind December, January, and February’s birthstones!

December- Zircon, Tanzanite, and Turquoise

December is a special month, claiming three different gemstones as its birthstone. Each gemstone is in the blue family. Zircon and Tanzanite are the modern options, while Turquoise is considered the traditional birthstone of December. Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones, which adorned the necks of Egyptian Pharaohs and even the dresses of early Native Americans. The beautiful blue color signifies healing powers, status and wealth, and good luck. Zircon is known to aid in resting and bring prosperity and wisdom to the owner. While it’s available in several different earth tones, the bright blue sky color is the most popular. Lastly, Tanzanite is a more recent discovery and only found in one place on earth, near majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. If you’re looking for a special piece of jewelry for a December baby, our Platinum Tanzanite And Diamond Ring is absolutely stunning!

January- Garnet

Both the modern and traditional gemstone for January is Garnet, which has been a prized possession for centuries. While Garnet can be found in nearly any color, the beautiful deep red tones are associated with the January birthstone. Garnet is said to symbolize friendship, love, loyalty, and trust. We have several beautiful jewelry pieces ready-made for January babies, including the Lunaria earrings, the Victorian Garnet and Seed Pearl Necklace, and one of our fan favorites, the gemdrop double garnets

February- Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of quartz that displays a beautiful purple color; A blend of rich violets and reds create the lighter lilac hue that we see. The Ancient Greeks believed that the gemstone enabled them to keep a balanced mindset and protected them against intoxication. Amethyst is also said to strengthen relationships and give courage. In the past, only royalty could wear Amethyst. February babies are lucky to have this gorgeous gem as its birthstone!  A few of our favorite pieces include the Gemdrop earrings with Amethyst & Opal, the handmade Amethyst pin, and the Antique Amethyst and Pearl ring, shown below.
