Creating Custom Jewelry as a Gift for Special Occasions

Creating Custom Jewelry as a Gift for Special Occasions

In today’s “pandemic world,” COVID-19 has sadly canceled many big events. Without in-person gatherings, it can be difficult to find a way to acknowledge milestones that deserve a big celebration. You may not be able to hop on a plane right now to celebrate in-person or throw a big party with all your family and friends, but there are unique and special ways to celebrate someone’s accomplishments, even during a pandemic. Whether it be a wedding, birthday, graduation, etc., creating a piece of custom jewelry is a special gift that’ll last a lifetime. A special piece of jewelry will make the milestone that much more memorable!

Milestones to Celebrate

Custom jewelry is a timeless gift that’ll make milestones that much sweeter. A dainty pair of earrings, a pendant necklace, engraved ring, or bracelet are just a few ideas to get started. And remember, our custom jewelry isn’t just for women! We can do men’s cufflinks, watches, bracelets, and beyond. Below are some of the special milestones that custom jewelry would make a great gift for:

  • Anniversaries
  • Birthdays
  • Graduations
  • New Job
  • Retirement
  • Pregnancy/Birth of a child
  • Engagement & weddings
  • Holidays- Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, etc.

Making it Special

As with any gift, you want your piece of jewelry to be unique and specific to the person receiving it. While a custom piece of jewelry is already incredibly special, we invite you to “think outside the box” to get creative and really tailor it for the occasion. If you’re giving it as a birthday gift, maybe you’ll choose to use the individual birthstone in the piece. If it’s an anniversary gift, consider engraving the date somewhere on the piece of jewelry. For a graduation gift, you may want to use the school colors or engravement of the graduation year. There are plenty of ways to get creative and personal when it comes to custom jewelry. Using engravings, mixing and matching gemstones, metals, and materials, the opportunities for design are endless! Our expert craftsman at Bostonian Jewelers will help you to create something beautiful and unique.

Anniversary Gift Guide: Jewelry & Gemstones for Each Year (Part 1)

Jewelry is a timeless gift for any occasion, and especially an anniversary. Did you know that each anniversary comes with a gemstone or metal associated with it? This tradition of anniversary gift dates back to 1922, when Emily Post published her first etiquette guide for each anniversary. Today, there is an official list of anniversary jewelry, endorsed by Jewelers of America and the American Gem Trade Association. In part 1 of our anniversary gift guide, we’ll cover the big milestones from the 1st to the 25th, so you’ll always know exactly what to get your significant other!

Year 1: Gold

You’ve likely had many firsts as a couple in this year, such as maybe your first home, first pet together, or maybe even your first child. All of these steps you’ve taken together this year deserved to be celebrated with something special. A gold piece of jewelry symbolizes eternity, unification, and vitality.

Year 5: Sapphire

You’ll be surprised how fast 5 years goes. At this point in your marriage, you’ve probably made some big changes together, whether it be moving from the city to the suburbs, starting a family, progressing your careers, etc. Sapphire is the traditional gemstone to celebrate your 5th anniversary. Ideas for Engraving Your Wedding Bands

Ideas for Engraving Your Wedding Bands

When choosing a wedding band with your partner, it can seem like they all blend together and maybe you want something unique. Your wedding band is something you’ll wear forever, and you want it to be symbolic of the love you two share. One way you can make it special and personal is by adding engravings. Adding a special date or romantic phrase will make it that much more sentimental. There are many different things you can do, and we’re here to give you some ideas for engravings!

A Special Date

Whether it was when you met, a first date, the day you made it “official,” or when he proposed, every couple has important dates in their relationship. Adding this date to your wedding band is a great reminder of this special milestone.

Initials

Another common engravement is to put initials, or even a full last name if you plan on sharing the name. Many couples opt to use both of their initials in the engraving, or just their partners. Either way, it is a sweet and romantic gesture that’ll make your wedding band more personal.

Bible Verse

Is there a certain bible verse that you and your partner live by? Perhaps one that fits for you both as a couple? Some of the most common for couples are Matthew 19:6, 1 Corinthians 16:14, and Song of Solomon 2:16, as they all relate to love. This is a special way to always remember to stay true to your faith in marriage.

Get Romantic

It is for your wedding, so why not get a little romantic? Adding a phrase such as “always & forever,” “i love you” or “soulmates,” will make it extra special. You and your partner can choose to have the same phrase, or select the phrase for the other as a surprise.

Keep It Short & Sweet

Most of all, it’s important to remember that these words have to fit in a small space. You don’t want to go over the top and try to cram too many words into it. Choose something that’ll be timeless, and always true for your relationship. Initials, dates, and short phrases are all romantic ideas!

The 4 Most Popular Types of Metals Used in Jewelry

The 4 Most Popular Types of Metals Used in Jewelry

Whether you’re looking for an engagement ring, wedding bands, or a custom piece of jewelry for someone special, there are so many options to choose from it can be overwhelming. One of the most important choices you’ll have to make, no matter what the piece is, is what kind of metal will be used. If it’s customizable, you’ll likely have several different options to choose from. While there are many metals available, there are 4 common metals that most jewelers work with. We’re here to break down the characteristics of each of these and what you need to know in order to make your decision.

Silver

Sterling silver is a beautiful option for any piece of jewelry, whether it’s necklaces, earrings, bracelets, cufflinks, rings, etc. The light grey color is neutral and versatile, making it appropriate for any occasion. It can even work well with other metals, so if you like to mix it up, silver can match with nearly any other metal. Silver is also hypoallergenic and far less likely to cause skin irritation or infections than other alternatives.  Additionally, it is a durable, long lasting metal. However, it is softer than gold, platinum and titanium, so proper care is extremely important to keep it from tarnishing.

Gold

It doesn’t get any more classic than gold. This timeless metal is a gorgeous choice for any special piece of jewelry. Gold is a mix of other metals, such as silver, copper, nickel and zing. It is measured in Karats, which describes the proportion of pure gold to the other materials used in the metal. There are several different variations of gold to choose from, depending on your style.

  • Yellow Gold- Typically when you’re talking about gold, you’re referring to yellow yold. It’s the purest form of the metal. It is an alloy of pure gold, silver, and copper or zinc.
  • White Gold- This is often more of a grayish color, made from an alloy of pure gold and white metals like nickel, silver and palladium.
  • Rose Gold- This trendy metal is made from the alloy of pure gold and a larger portion of copper, giving it a pink or red tone.

Platinum

If you’re looking for something durable, platinum is the way to go. It’s extremely strong and will never tarnish, making it a great choice for wedding bands and everyday jewelry. Platinum is often alloyed with copper and cobalt for a unique look, but you can also pair it with other metals for even stronger durability.

Titanium

The most durable and hardest natural metal known to man is titanium. It’s scratch resistant, lightweight, and completely hypoallergenic. Plus, it’s easy to color so you can customize it to suit your style. The one drawback of titanium is that it isn’t resizable, so it doesn’t make the best option for rings since your finger size can change over time. Titanium is great for piercings, necklaces, cufflinks, and beyond!

If you still have questions about which type of metal is best for your piece of jewelry, the experts at Bostonian Jewelers can help! Get in touch with us today by calling (617) 523-2934 or stop by our store in Downtown Crossing in Boston.

How to Restore Heirloom Jewelry to Suit Your Style

How to Restore Heirloom Jewelry to Suit Your Style

There's nothing more special than a piece of jewelry that has been passed down from generation to generation, carrying years worth of memories and stories. Heirloom jewelry holds a sentimental value that a new piece simply can't replace. It often holds an emotional attachment to the original owner, whether it be your mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, or close family member. However, often these heirloom pieces sit in the back of a jewelry box for years untouched. Sometimes it just needs to be cleaned and shined, or there might be a missing gemstone or broken piece, or maybe it's just not in style anymore. Luckily, there are many different ways to restore or repurpose these heirloom pieces to make them more modern and fit your style! Here are a few ideas to breathe some new life into your special jewelry.

Tune it Up

If your piece of jewelry is covered in cobwebs from sitting in the closet for years, maybe all it needs is a quick tune-up to make it wearable again! A proper cleaning can work wonders. Bringing it to a jeweler for a professional cleaning and inspection to ensure there are no loose gemstones or pieces may be beneficial.

Change the Metal

While gold was typically the most popular metal choice back in the day, as it symbolized elegance and wealth, today, it's not necessarily everyone's first choice. Remounting the diamond of an heirloom ring onto a white gold or platinum band could give the piece a trendy and modern look!

Repurpose the Piece

Let's face it; A vintage brooch that your grandmother wore in the '40s might not be in style right now, but that doesn't mean you can't find a way to make it stylish! Consider repurposing the gemstones to recreate your own unique piece of jewelry, while carrying the sentimental value of the heirloom. You can even take a larger piece, like a statement necklace, and turn it into several smaller pieces such as stud earrings so that multiple family members can enjoy the sentiment. This way, you can still have an heirloom piece with ties to the past, and can still be passed down and worn for years to come.

Contact us for Jewelry Restoration

At Bostonian Jewelers, we specialize in jewelry restorations, and love being able to breathe new life into your special pieces of jewelry. If you're unsure how to make your heirloom jewelry wearable again, we'll help you reimagine and design a piece that beautifully suits your style, while maintaining its integrity. How to Tastefully Accessorize Your Wedding Dress

How to Tastefully Accessorize Your Wedding Dress

Once you’ve found the dress of your dreams for your special day, now comes the fun part; Accessorizing! Of course, the dress is the star of the show, but finding just the right accessories to complement it will bring the whole look together. From choosing shoes, to the veil, a headpiece, jewelry, and beyond, it can be easy to get carried away. You want to keep it elegant and tasteful. Matching your metals, keeping it minimal, and sticking true to your style will make all the difference. We’re here to provide you with some tips for choosing jewelry that’ll look absolutely stunning as you walk down the aisle to exchange your vows.

Match Your Metals

When choosing your earrings, necklace, bracelets, etc., the first and perhaps most important rule of thumb is to match your metals. It’s best to match them to the metal used for your engagement ring and wedding bands to stay consistent. Some metals will match better with different shades of white. For example, an ivory dress wil best pair with gold, as it highlights the creamy shades of the fabric. If your dress has any sort of beading, let that guide you in the direction of a matching metal. If you’re unsure which metal would complement your dress best, our experts will be glad to point you in the right direction!

Less is More

You’ve heard the saying before, and it is especially true for your wedding look. The dress should be the statement and the jewelry is there to elegantly complement it. Too many accessories can be distracting and take away from your already gorgeous look. Dainty and classic pieces of jewelry such as diamond or pearl earrings will look stunning with any wedding dress. Small studs are a great choice or gem drops if you’re looking for something a little more bold.

Consider Your Neckline

Wedding dresses can have all different necklines, from sweetheart, to high-neck, scoop neck or v-cut. When choosing a necklace, you’ll want to keep this in mind. Finding a necklace that’ll complement the shape of the neckline is key. If you have a high-neck gown, you may want to skip the necklace and opt for a fancier pair of earrings.

Stay True to Your Style

Although it’s your wedding day and you may want to dress up like a princess, you’ll feel most comfortable in something that's close to your style. You’ll radiate looking like the most beautiful version of yourself (rather than a fairytale character)! If you typically opt for statement jewelry, then go for it. If you rarely wear jewelry, something subtle is probably your best bet. You may even consider choosing a piece with your birthstone or an heirloom piece that has special sentiment.

Create a Custom Piece

While we offer a gorgeous selection of ready made jewelry to choose from, you may want to create a custom piece to suit your style. After all, it’s your special day, and you should have exactly what you want down to every last detail and accessory. Our jewelers in Boston have been creating bridal jewelry for decades, and have the expertise to create just the right piece for you. Get in touch with us today to set up a consultation

The Gemstone of Summer; Ruby

The Gemstone of Summer; Ruby

While some people like to categorize the months by zodiac signs and horoscopes, as jewelers, we of course associate each time of year with a gemstone. Most people are likely aware that each month has a gemstone or “birthstone” associated with it. But did you know that each of the 4 seasons does as well? By no surprise, summer’s gemstone is the Ruby, also the birthstone of July babies! The ruby is a breathtaking gemstone with a history dating back to around 200BC. We love creating unique jewelry pieces with this gorgeous gemstone of summer! Keep reading to learn more about the history of the Ruby, and check out some of our top picks for ruby pieces!

Why Rubies are a Special Stone

The ruby is a special stone, as it’s considered one of the “big four,” meaning that it’s a precious stone. Rubies are valued according to their color, opposite of how diamonds are characterized by how colorless they are. The most valuable rubies have a deep blood-red color, with a high level of clarity. These deep hues represent passion, vividness, and power. Glowing rubies suggest a sense of love, warmth, and vitality, which has made them a popular choice for engagement rings!

The History of the Ruby

The story of the precious ruby gemstone can be traced back to the ancient Silk Road of China, when Asian traders imported rubies back to their native cultures. Rubies were always held in high regard, symbolizing good luck for many Asian cultures. These valuable gemstones were used not only in jewelry but also to ornament armor for wealthy noblemen of this time. Some wealthy people laid rubies at the foundations of their home as a good luck charm. The ancient Hindus thought of ruby as the king of all gems and believed that wearing it could ward off evil. While the meaning of ruby gemstones has changed throughout the years, the ruby is still a rare and valuable gemstone that is cherished by many.

Designing an Engagement Ring Virtually

Designing an Engagement Ring Virtually
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many plans, but it certainly shouldn’t get in the way of one of the biggest moments of your life. Big events and parties may be canceled, but love certainly is not!  If you were planning on popping the question in the near future but hadn’t started the process of choosing or designing a ring yet, no need to worry. While some jewelers are beginning to open around the state, you may still not be comfortable leaving your home for a consultation, and we fully understand! We’re gladly still offering virtual consultations to meet the needs of all our clients. We’ll work with you to create the ring of her dreams! Keep reading to learn more about our virtual consultation process and designing a custom engagement ring with Bostonian Jewelers.

Setting up the Consultation

Scheduling the initial design consultation is the first step in the process of creating a gorgeous custom ring! To book your virtual consultation, all you have to do is simply fill out an online form or give us a call. From there, we’ll send you a Google Hangouts or Zoom link for us to both join at the time of your appointment. We’ll treat the virtual consultation just as we would an in-person one; Together, we’ll look over your inspirational images, discuss the different options for gemstones and metals, sizing, and all of the other key details we’ll need.

Designing the Model

Once we’re on the same page about the details of the ring, we can start the design process! We use sophisticated 3D CAD technology that allows us to create realistic renderings of your design so that you can see exactly what the ring will look like. Once you see and approve these high-resolution images, we move onto the phase where we create wax models of your engagement ring. This allows you to see and feel what the actual ring will be like. If you choose to do this virtually, we can discuss alternative solutions for this step.

Diamonds & Gemstones

After we have the final design approved, we’ll start sourcing stones for your ring. With custom designs, you get to choose the exact stone that’ll be used in your ring, from the type, color, and shape. These stones can all be shared virtually through images or videos to make the decision.

Engineering the Ring

Lastly, when the design process is complete and we’ve agreed upon all aspects of the ring, we begin the process to make your dream ring come to life! Our craftsman handset each of the stones, add detailing and finish the metal right in our Boston studio. We guarantee you’ll be satisfied with the precision and quality of our craftsmanship!

Delivery

And finally, your dream engagement ring is completed! We’ll happily deliver the ring to you to ensure it gets in your hands safely. When you receive your ring, we’ll also give you your appraisal, information about ring insurance, and guidance for how to care for your ring properly.

Engagement Ring Trends We’re Seeing Everywhere in 2020

Engagement Ring Trends We’re Seeing Everywhere in 2020

While classic diamond rings are always a gorgeous choice, as custom jewelers, we’ve seen and created some unique and trendy engagement rings that we couldn’t help but share. From intricate settings to clusters of diamonds and bold flashy rings, these 2020 trends are absolutely stunning! Check out some of our favorite engagement ring trends and creations below.

Intricate settings

It’s all in the details! While the diamond is the focal point of the ring, that doesn’t mean the setting can’t be beautifully crafted, too. These intricate settings are becoming more popular and we’re loving it. A detailed setting is a luxurious way to add some more personality to the ring, while still showcasing the center stone. Using colorful gemstones, geometric shapes, and other intricate detailing, we can create a unique setting for your diamond.

Big and Bold

All eyes will certainly be on you, with these big and bold engagement rings! It seems that more and more brides are opting for flashy, unique rings, rather than dainty and modest. Whether it be a large diamond or a unique gemstone, such as a ruby or sapphire, there are no rules when it comes to your engagement ring! It should showcase your individual personality and be something you’ll love for decades to come. We can help design something that’s bold and beautiful, while still tasteful and timeless.

Cluster Rings

The more diamonds the merrier; That’s what we always say! It looks like one diamond just isn’t always enough, and especially this year. More and more brides are loving the “cluster” of diamonds. The Bostonian Three Stone Ring has long been a favorite of ours, and we love seeing how it fits into recent trends. We can also create custom cluster designs, mixing and matching with your favorite diamond and gemstone cuts. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a cluster of diamonds!

Alternative Halos

Let’s get edgy, ladies! While your center diamond may be a traditional cushion cut or oval diamond, adding a bolder, sharper halo will really make it stand out! Alternative halo shapes, such as sunburst and pointed flower-like petals are becoming a desired choice for many brides in 2020.
