A Story of Strength and Courage

A Story of Strength and Courage

There are moments in our lives that cause us to stop, to breathe deeply and to remember how small we actually are. Moments that give The Daily Grind perspective, push us towards remembering what really matters. Of course, our jobs matter - providing for ourselves and our loved ones is ultimately why we work so tirelessly. I am one of the lucky ones, who has the opportunity to actually love the work I do… But back to my original premise: perspective and what really matters, including those who overcome tragedy and trial, who rise from the seemingly impossible places of pain and grief, not only to carry on - but who become stronger, more resolved and quietly more beautiful throughout the rebuilding process.

Renata is such a person. In January of 2017, the beautiful, vivacious young woman was seriously injured in an automobile accident on Route 128. Severe facial fractures and bodily trauma required multiple surgeries to reconstruct her cheekbones, forehead, jaw and teeth, and included the amputation of her left arm. Renata had been passionate about health and fitness, and had put in the work required to compete as a bodybuilder. I cannot imagine how she must have felt, waking up in a hospital, with no remembrance of the accident, trying to grasp how her life had been forever changed. She could’ve allowed the physical pain and emotional sorrow to swallow her. But she fought - for herself and her family. She held onto her courage, her resolve and her hope.

When I heard Renata’s story, I was moved. A friend of mine asked me to create a piece for a photoshoot centered around Renata’s return from tragedy. I wanted to create something bold, unique and strong, but still feminine, soft and organic. The result was an original ear cuff, crafted of beautifully hammered silver and glowing pearls. Each step of the process was inspired by Renata, from sketch to metal design, to hammering.

We, at Bostonian Jewelers, are honored and grateful for the opportunity we have had to create a piece that represents such an amazing young woman.

A Unique Celebration of Life; The Memorial Diamond

A Unique Celebration of Life; The Memorial Diamond

As custom jewelers, we get to be a part of celebrating the big moments in our lives; Often times, this may be an engagement, graduation, anniversary, and many other major milestones. When working with custom jewelry pieces, one of the most incredible parts of doing so is being able to create or repair something that has a unique meaning and significance to an individual. Sometimes this is done by restoring antique jewelry pieces that have been passed down from generation to generation, and other times it's starting from scratch to create something special.

We love all of the unique designs that we get to be a part of; One, in particular, that holds near and dear to our hearts, is the great honor of being able to create a memorial diamond ring. We recently worked with a client who lost her mother and wanted to celebrate her life with a piece that would reflect the woman she was. She chose to have a memorial diamond created from her mother’s ashes, which we were then able to set into an open ring band.

The Process

Having a memorial diamond created from the ashes of your loved one that has passed on is a unique way to remember and celebrate their life, and help you feel connected to them every day. The process synthesizes the environment of diamond creation with controlled heat and pressure. Just like any custom piece of jewelry, the diamond will take on characteristics of its own; However, the color is always blue, due to the boron our bodies leave behind. We’ve worked with several trusted companies that specialize in this process and would be happy to guide you in the right direction. Once your diamond is created, Bostonian Jewelers can set it into a unique ring, necklace, or any custom jewelry piece you desire. This treasured piece of jewelry is one that you will help to bring you a sense of comfort and peace, feeling closer to your loved one.

Custom Memorial Diamond Ring

While some stories that come along almost feel too personal to share, it’s ones like this that remind us to embrace life's moments that, as jewelers, we experience with our clients. We took this blue emerald cut memorial diamond that our client had made, balanced with special marquis shape stones to create a unique custom open ring band. This is a unique and personal way to celebrate and remember the life of a loved one, and we feel fortunate to be able to be part of the process.

4 Popular Gemstones Used In Jewelry

4 Popular Gemstones Used In Jewelry

Jewelry is a great way to show personality while complementing an outfit no matter what situation. For the most part, jewelry is known for having diamonds as the gemstone of choice as they are known for their elegance and beauty. If you are looking for your jewelry to truly showcase your personality and add character to your look, then what better way than to include a colored gemstone or even your birthstone. By adding a gemstone to your piece, you can turn an ordinary piece of jewelry into an extraordinary one! What is great with birthstones and colored gemstones is the fact that you can base your outfits theme and color off your jewelry. Below are five of the most common gemstones, other than diamonds, that are requested when crafting jewelry.

Amethyst

Amethyst gemstones are known for their deep purple color and are said to be a calming stone. This beautiful gem represents love, happiness, and wealth in one’s life. At one point, they were considered more precious than diamonds due to the vintage elegance the purple color exudes. At Bostonian Jewelers we have several pieces of jewelry that feature amethyst gemstones.

Emerald

When you think of royalty and jewelry, the emerald gemstone is on that comes to mind due to the powerful eye-catching ability of the deep green colors of the stone. These stones have been used in numerous jewelry pieces including wedding and engagement rings. What makes these stones so popular, aside from their amazing look, is that you can combine them with other gems to craft a truly intricate piece. Pairing emerald with diamond on a jewelry piece looks fantastic as the green and clear colors of the stones complement each other very well.

Ruby

Probably the most popular gemstone aside from diamond is July’s birthstone the ruby. Ruby gems represent love and passion, so they are widely used in jewelry that are looking to portray affection to a loved one. The different tones that the ruby gemstone has makes it’s a versatile stone to use for a variety of jewelry pieces. Whether it is an earring, ring, or necklace, if you are looking to showcase love and affection then the ruby gemstone is the one for you.

Sapphire

Another gemstone that places high in popular gems used in jewelry is the sapphire. Sapphires come in a variety of colors which is why they are so widely used, as they can be mixed and matched with a necklace, bracelet, earring, or any jewelry piece the stone is being added to. By being available in many colors, the wearer can truly bring their character to life by showcasing a sapphire in their favorite color. While there are different colors, the blue sapphire is the most well-known.

4 Common Jewelry Repairs

4 Common Jewelry Repairs

While we all expect jewelry that we purchase to last a life time, that sadly is not the case. Based on how often we wear a piece of jewelry and the environment the jewelry is exposed to, wear and tear as well as damage can occur. While a broken piece of jewelry may seem like the end of the line, contacting a jeweler that specializes in jewelry repair can make your jewelry look good as new. At Bostonian Jewelers, we have over 49 years of experience repairing and restoring different types of jewelry. Below are four common types of jewelry repairs that you will come across.

Discoloration

A common request we have see and come across over the years is to restore a piece of jewelry that has lost some of its color. While there are many products on the market that aim at cleaning jewelry at home and DIY solutions, there is nothing compared to cleaning done by a professional jeweler. To get back the “fresh-from-the-case” you will need certain solutions and polishes that only jewelers will have access too. From bracelets, rings, and vintage jewelry our technicians will be happy to restore your jewelry back to the shine your piece had when you first purchased it.

Broken Clasps

Over time, the clasps of your favorite necklace has probably become tilted, bent, or damaged due to the amount of times you wear your beloved jewelry. While you can get replacement clasps at any craft store, they won’t be the same material so the original clasps and will wear out faster than the original clasp. By going to a professional jewelry repair service, they will find you a clasp using quality metal that is either the same or close to the material of the rest of the necklace. Aside from having high quality metals, jewelers also have top of the line solder equipment to make sure that the new clasps are securely fasten.

Ring Resizing

While not every person may come across this issue, more likely than not though you will need to have one of your rings resized at one point in your life time. Whether it be from weight gain or loss, to weather conditions swelling or shrinking the tissue in your fingers, your beloved ring may feel too tight or too loose. If you find yourself in this situation then it may be time for you to contact a jeweler about getting your ring resized. Jewelers have the tools necessary to get the most accurate sizing through either stretching, bridging, or shaving.

Loose Stones

When it comes to rings and earrings with gemstones, one of the most common issues that occurs is when the stone gets too loose and potentially be lost. The sad thing about this is that most owners don’t realize any looseness until it is to late and the gemstone is lost. Gemstones become loose when the prongs holding them get worn down over time, while also typically get caught on clothing which could cause them to bend out of place. Loose stones also occur depending on different types of everyday activities you do while wearing the jewelry that could cause the prongs to bend or pull. With a professional jeweler taking care of your piece of jewelry, they have the tools and experience to solder prongs to proper alignment and even rebuild prongs if necessary.

If you are looking for quality jewelry repair services in the Boston area, contact Bostonian Jewelers to have your jewelry restored just like new!

Everything You Need To Know About Ring Sizing

Everything You Need To Know About Ring Sizing

While Bostonian Jewelers is widely known for custom jewelry design as well as repairs and restorations, we take pride in being a one stop shop for all jewelry services. Our expertise services include ring sizing services for those looking to have their prized possession fit comfortably on their fingers. At Bostonian Jewelers, if customers purchased a ring from our jewelry store, we offer courtesy sizing within the first year of purchase.

Our ring sizing services take about 30-45 minutes, so we suggest an appointment be made to ensure our technicians have enough time to size the ring to your liking while also fitting your appointment with your schedule for that day. When it comes to sizing a ring, our customers can choose from two options; sizing down or sizing up.

Sizing Down

Have a ring that is too loose on your finger and are afraid of losing it? Contact Bostonian Jewelers for our sizing down ring services to have a ring that fits perfectly on your ring. The sizing down process consists of our experienced jewelry technicians removing a small segment of metal from the bottom of the ring. Once the excess metal is removed, we reshape the ring by having the now two ends of the ring meet.

We do this by using a laser to weld the seam closed. Bostonian Jewelers opts for laser welding for our services as it eliminates heat distribution. This assures a smooth and seamless surface while also protecting your gemstone from getting damaged which typically can occur when welding is done using heat from a torch or solder. Once finished, we polish and clean the entire ring and inspect everything before returning it.

Sizing Up

With sizing up a ring, the process is like the sizing down process but instead of removing a piece from the ring, we add metal to increase the size of the ring. We make sure that the new piece installed is large enough to increase the overall symmetry to accommodate the finger size. Our goldsmith creates a piece of gold, platinum or silver, matching the shape, size, and color of the metal of your ring. This piece is then applied to the base of the ring within the opening we created and laser welding it into place.

If you are looking to get your ring sized up or down or would like more information on our other jewelry services please contact Bostonian Jewelers today!

Do I Need Jewelry Insurance?

Do I Need Jewelry Insurance?

Whether you just received a stunning engagement ring, or you finally purchased those emerald earrings you’ve been eyeing, keeping your belongings safe is of the utmost importance. Valuable possessions, especially precious jewelry, should be insured so you don’t need to panic in the event of items being lost or damaged. The types of jewelry that are most often put under jewelry insurance include wedding bands, engagement rings, diamond rings, watches and antique jewelry. If you’re unsure whether you need to insure your ring, watch or other accessory, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I afraid to wear jewelry because I could lose it?
  • Can I cover the cost if my jewelry gets lost of stolen?
  • Will I have to settle for a replacement?

All jewelry insurance policies pay out when jewelry is stolen or damaged while some policies will pay out if you lose jewelry.

What Can I Expect to Be Covered by Jewelry Insurance?

As mentioned, you will need to invest in extra coverage to insure lost jewelry is covered. Theft, of course, is covered up to a certain limit so if your jewelry is worth much more, it’s time to consider additional coverage. Jewelry insurance also covers damaged jewelry such as bent prongs or missing stones.

Where Do I Buy Jewelry Insurance?

Most homeowner and renter’s insurance companies do provide coverage for jewelry of up to $1,500 but if you don’t have either, you can add jewelry insurance. There are several types of coverage you can choose from – scheduled floater, rider or endorsement. Through these policies you can itemize specific jewelry; please note, these insurance policies have a high coverage limit compared to your typical homeowner or renter’s insurance policy.

A jewelry-only insurance company offers a stand-alone policy but if you work with a company that specializes in jewelry insurance, you’ll most likely receive more comprehensive coverage.

What Do I Need to Get My Jewelry Insured?

Ready to insure your jewelry? Make sure you have the original receipt and certifications if you have larger gemstones. Additionally, you’ll need an appraisal from a certified appraiser who will photograph your jewelry. Getting an appraisal is crucial as this is the only way to know the exact value of your jewelry. Since the value of jewelry and gemstones increase annually due to inflation alone, keep in mind that you will need to get an appraisal revised for Items already insured every 3-5 years, so you won't be underinsured if there's a loss.

Do I Need Jewelry Insurance for Gifts?

If you’re purchasing jewelry as a gift, you’ll need to make sure it’s insured. Once you give the gift, cancel the insurance coverage. The receiver of the gift should purchase insurance immediately.

The Right Way to Clean Gold Jewelry

The Right Way to Clean Gold Jewelry

When it comes to jewelry, gold is one of the first metals that come to mind. This element is beautiful, sophisticated, luxurious, and is great material to have in your jewelry if you are looking to catch the attention of the room. When it comes gold jewelry, there are proper cleaning measures you will need to take to not only cleanse your gold but to prevent it from shortening the longevity of the gold. Before we dive into the proper methods to clean gold, lets discuss the properties that make up your favorite gold jewelry.

Properties of Gold Jewelry

If you are wondering if you have a piece of jewelry that is pure gold or not, you will want to look at the karat number of said jewelry. If the jewelry you are looking to clean shows that it is made of 24 karat gold, then you have a piece made of pure gold. If your piece is less than 24 karats then it indicates that your jewelry was mixed with other metals, also called alloys, that help increase the durability and hardness of the piece. This does not mean that having jewelry that is not pure gold is a bad thing as you will want less pure gold depending on your lifestyle. With gold being prone to scratching, being mixed with different alloys assists with its longevity.

How to Clean Gold Jewelry

If you find a commercial jewelry solution that is made specifically for gold, then that would be the best method of cleaning your gold jewelry on your own. However, if you do not have a commercial solution you still have other methods of cleaning your pieces at home. With this do it yourself method, you will be mixing common household cleansers to make your gold shine just like new. Below are steps to cleaning your gold jewelry at home:

  • Mix a few drops of liquid Dawn dish detergent/soap in warm water.
  • Add a tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide.
  • Let the gold jewelry sit in the solution for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Carefully brush the piece of a soft toothbrush, brushing outward.
  • Place in lukewarm water to rinse.
  • Air dry the piece over a towel.

Be sure to keep in mind tat gold is a soft metal, so be sure to gently brush the piece when cleaning.

Hazards to Avoid When Cleaning Gold Jewelry

Since gold is typically mixed with other alloys, there is a chance that the gold will tarnish if cleaned with improper solutions. Below are two hazards to avoid if you want to protect your gold jewelry.

  • Soap - Make sure you are not going to clean your piece using a soap with unknown ingredients. Basic blue Dawn dish detergent/soap as mentioned above is fine, but you will want to make sure you do not use solutions with foreign ingredients that could harm the gold.
  • Chlorine - Chlorine can permanently damage or discolor your gold jewelry, especially at high temperatures. If you have a hot tub, be sure to remove the piece to avoid damage.
Using A Jeweler to Clean Gold Jewelry

If cleaning your gold jewelry on your own brings a layer of nerves, as you do not want to damage your jewelry, the safest method to use is to go to your local jeweler to have them professionally clean the piece for you. Jewelers will know the proper procedures and solutions to use depending on the type of metal and gemstone, if the piece includes gemstone, to ensure your piece looks as good as new. While consulting your jeweler on the cleaning it is not a bad idea to ask them about restoration options if you have an older piece of gold jewelry.

If you have any questions about cleaning gold jewelry, jewelry restoration, or jewelry repair services, be sure to contact Bostonian Jewelers today
