How to Tell if Your Diamond is Real?
Dump Your Diamond in a Glass of Water
Fill a glass about ¾ of the way and plop your diamond in. If it floats, it’s fake; if it sinks, you’ve got a real diamond.
Put Your Diamond on a Piece of Paper and Draw a Dot
Draw a small dot on a piece of paper. Lay the stone on the dot, side down. Look down: if you see the dot through the diamond, it’s fake. If you can’t see the dot, it’s because your diamond is real.
Breathe On Your Diamond
For this test to work, you’ll need to “hold the diamond or ring between two fingers and breathe on it with a puff of air,” per DiamondPro.com. If the fog immediately disappears, your diamond is real. If it takes a while? You’ve got a dud. As the website reported in 2024, “Diamonds effectively conduct heat and therefore disperse heat quickly.”
Shine a Flashlight on Your Diamond
Turn off all of the lights and grab a flashlight. Please turn it on and put your diamond underneath it. Pay attention to how the light refracts off the diamond. If you’re holding it in the light right, you should be able to see “a scintillating sparkle,” which often resembles a rainbow wheel. If you don’t see a rainbow, you know the answer.
