How to Care for Your Diamond Engagement Ring

You have received the most beautiful engagement ring, but how do you care for it? Diamond engagement rings require proper maintenance as does any fine jewelry in your possession. Continue reading for tips on cleaning, protecting, and properly caring for your ring.

The Fit of Your Ring Matters

The fit of your ring is an important factor in ring care. Your ring should fit snugly on your finger–not impossible to take off but not easily able to slip off your finger. If your ring is too big for your finger, it could suddenly fall off and damage the center stone. However, if it is too small, it could warp the band to the shape of your finger and overall be very uncomfortable. Sizing isn’t difficult but if you aren’t sure if your ring is the correct size, book a consultation with Bostonian Jewelers.

When Should You Take Your Ring Off?

We understand that you would want to show off your beautiful ring at all times. However, there are some occasions when you should take your ring off to avoid damage to the center stone or band.

You should take off your ring when exercising. If you lift weights, you could easily knock your ring against something heavy which can lead to scraping, scuffing, or even chipping your center stone. Vigorous exercising can also dirty your ring from sweat.

You should set your ring aside when washing your hands or showering. Harsh soaps and tap water can dirty your diamond and accelerate wear and tear. This is the same for performing house chores. Accidentally spraying cleaning solution on your ring could aid in dirting your diamond.

How to Clean Your Ring

A dirty diamond is dull and may appear cloudy with a brownish tint. Because diamonds are naturally sticky, it can attract dirt and grime very quickly. Regularly cleaning your diamond can keep it in tip-top shape. The following products should NOT be used to clean your ring:

  • Toothpaste
  • Boiling water
  • Any hard bristle brush
  • Vodka

Avoid any cleaning “hacks” and make sure to clean your ring the correct way. If you cannot bring your ring to get professionally cleaned, use the following to clean your ring at home:

  • Dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Soft bristle brush

Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap, and let your ring sit in the solution for 2-3 minutes. Then, take your engagement ring and gently brush the ring with the soft bristle brush. Rinse the ring with fresh water and dry it with a microfiber towel.
