How to Keep the Sparkle in your Engagement Ring

Congratulations on your engagement! The question was popped, and you exclaimed, "yes," and now the ring sits perfectly on your finger. It's an exciting time! A few months down the line, the shine of your ring has dulled slightly. Fortunately, this isn't a permanent loss of shine. There are many ways to keep the sparkle in your engagement ring.

Stop Touching It!

It can be difficult to wear something so beautiful without admiring it consistently. Your ring catches your eye, and you can't help but touch it. Unfortunately, touching it so much is part of what dulls the shine. Your fingers have natural oils combined with everything else you've touched. Touching the diamonds transfers those oils, hair products, lotions, makeup, and more to the ring.

It can be difficult to break your habit, but it is best to admire your ring with eyes only. Even when you are taking your ring off, avoid touching the diamond. Use the metal band to remove and put it back on.

Clean It Weekly

Cleaning your ring at home is a simple and effective process to keep the sparkle in your engagement ring. While special products exist for cleaning rings, they are not necessarily required to clean your ring well. In fact, all you need is some warm water, dish soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Start by putting warm water in a bowl and adding a squirt of Dawn or other dish soap. Place your engagement ring in the bowl and leave it for about half an hour. After the ring has soaked, remove it and use the toothbrush to brush the ring gently. You can then leave it on a towel to air dry or pat dry with a microfiber cloth.

It is important to note that you must use the soft-bristled toothbrush gently. Scrubbing the ring could cause damage, especially if it's done weekly. A gentle cleaning once a week will help retain the ring's shine.

Take Your Ring in For a Cleaning

A jeweler can clean your ring and help to maintain the sparkle. While the jeweler has your ring, they will likely check it for potential damages to ensure the cleaning will not harm it further. If damages exist, a professional jeweler can repair the ring for you.
